999 SQUADRON SPONSORING COMMITTEE
The 999 Squadron Sponsoring Committee shares responsibility with the Canadian Forces for the effective operation of 999 Loyalist Thunderbird Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadets. Sponsorship involves public relations in the community, recruiting assistance and the funding of activities for the development and training of youth when resources are not provided by the Department of National Defence. This youth movement offers a structured program that develops valuable life skills and attributes such as teamwork, responsible citizenship, self-discipline, leadership, effective speaking and interview skills. This all takes place around an interest in aviation. The Squadron has enlisted almost 40 youths, 12 to 18 years of age, in this jurisdiction which encompasses Amherstview and Loyalist Township. The young men and women air cadets participate in local training and activities during the school year, and many attend summer training camps of 2 to 6 weeks duration. Familiarization flights and flying training in gliding are given using the Ontario Provincial Committee’s glider and tow-plane fleets. This charity participates in an effective speaking competition for air cadets, provides opportunities for them to develop excellent intrapersonal skills, and expands their knowledge of Canada through visits to cultural and civic attractions.
